I’ve been looking for a Wireless Qi Charging solution for a Tesla Model S since I bought it a year ago. I found versions that sat in the storage bin as a tray like the Topfit one here:
But this wasn’t what I was looking for.
I really wanted something to sit where the factory quick connection phone dock sits, but provide Qi charging.
There are those more adventurous than me that went about hacking their own Qi charger into the console cover of the car – close to what I wanted but not without alot of risk.
Then I found this:
A 3D model on Thingiverse for a Qi Charging dock that mounts using the builtin mounting clips of the console cover, and supports an inexpensive Qi charging plate. But I don’t own a 3D printer! Thanks to Tempo3D on Treatstock I was able to outsource it cost-effectively.
Total kit list I purchased for this via Amazon USA is as follows:
Qi Wireless Charging Pad
Low profile QC 3.0 USB charger
USB Right Angle Extension Cable
With the 3D print this all adds up to around $72 USD.
For any Australians reading this, equivalent parts on Amazon Australia are:
Qi Wireless Charging Pad
Low profile QC 3.0 USB charger
USB Right Angle Extension Cable
So how does it look?
This is the printed part. I went with the “iPhone 8 Plus No Case” version of the model as I have an iPhone XS Max.
And in the car installed:
Needless to say, I’m super happy with the outcome.
The console cover still closes without issue and everything works brilliantly.
Note: I went with the flush/low profile QC 3.0 USB Car Charger so the cabling didn’t get in the way of closing the console cover.
Enjoy!
Thank you for sharing this! I just pulled down the 3D model, had it printed, and dropped it in to my Model S, and it works like a charm!
